Have you ever wondered about the first handmade wood jewelry box ? That is definitely a difficult history to trace even though jewelry has been worn by our earliest stone age ancestors and right down the ages!
The first jewelry casket, as it was originally called, might have originated in Egypt as it is thought that the Egyptians were the ones who started transporting their jewelry hidden in ceramic jars. And specimens of small trinket boxes have been unearthed at archaeological sites of ancient Babylon and Egypt dating back to 3000 BC. There were also small boxes that had been crudely nailed together, which might have been used to store jewelry.
Wood seems to have been used in creating jewelry boxes in Rome, Asia, and Europe several centuries ago. Antimonial lead, bronze, calcite, china, ivory were some of the popular materials used in those days and Asian boxes were covered with silk. The boxes were usually electroplated with copper and finished with silver or gold, or even ivory.
