Gold filled jewelry , sometimes referred to as gold overlay or rolled gold plate , but it is not actually filled with gold, but rather made by bonding a layer of gold to the actual base metal which in many instances is brass and sometimes sterling silver. In order for gold filled jewelry to be actually classified as such, the bonded layer of gold must be at least 10 karat gold.
